The GV track and field team puts up a strong competition at the PIAA State Championships! After a season of rigorous workouts and long meets, these athletes have persevered and consistently pushed themselves to perform at their best. Just a week before, they competed in the District 1 Championship meet to get the necessary marks for States.
In the field, Izzy Tront took 2nd place in high jump, with an incredible jump of 5’6”. This mark is Izzy’s PR, and she has only hit it once at a previous meet this season. Additionally, running on so little sleep due to racing from her senior prom to States makes this feat even more incredible. As one of the most valuable and versatile field athletes on the team, this medal is the top finish for a GV female field athlete in a State Championship yet!
In the individual track events, Avery McCrimon, Felicia Grimmelbein, and Jonathan Wert competed. Avery McCrimon took 8th place in the 100m at 12.25 seconds, making her the first GV girl to ever medal in this event! Felicia Grimmelbein took 3rd place in the 300m Hurdles race with an astounding time of 42.90 seconds. In the 100m, Jonathan Wert ran a time of 10.73 seconds and secured 5th place. Shout-out to Cole Hoffacker for competing in the 100m prelims and Jonathan Wert in the 200m prelims.
Two GV relay teams competed at States. The girls' 4x400 relay team was composed of Felicia Grimmelbein, Brigid Sullivan, Avery McCrimon, and Kendel Cottrell. The incredible mark of 3:55.65 seconds earned them 6th place. Special recognition for Lily Mellinger stepping in on this relay on the first day of getting preliminary marks at States, May 23rd, substituting for Cottrell so she could attend her senior prom. As for the boys, their 4x100 relay team consisted of Cole Hoffacker, Shane Miller, Koan Sinor, and Jonathan Wert. Running a spectacular time of 41.68 seconds, they placed 2nd in the event.
Notably, all of these athletes hold the school record in their respective events. While most of these PRs were earned at previous meets in the season rather than States, it nonetheless shows their incredible skills and dedication. Achieving a school record is an incredible and admirable accomplishment!
Congratulations to all of these incredible athletes and their unbelievable performances at the PIAA State Championships!
