In a modern world where technology is advancing faster than ever, the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on creativity has sparked significant debates, especially when it comes to students. As AI tools such as ChatGPT or Gemini AI become more popular, students are relying more heavily on these technologies for assignments. But, the question remains : Does AI hinder the growth of creativity amongst students?
AI use has had a profound negative impact on teen’s creativity, especially when it comes to assignments that require personal interpretation. When asked to reflect on the effects of AI on teens, English teacher at GVHS Mr.Carboni said, “Absolutely, it takes away all creative thought.” However, other perspectives from other teachers suggest otherwise, having a positive outlook on AI. “There could be a positive impact on their creativity, but only if they use it to help enhance their work.” Stated Mr.Kivlen, a history teacher at GVHS.
On the flip side, students also have mixed feelings about the use of AI. Madeleine Mendoza, a senior at GVHs admits, “For me personally, I think that using AI has simultaneously made me more and less creative. On one hand, I don’t try as hard to think of new ideas for things. But on the other hand, using AI has allowed me to create new ideas off of the ones that it gives me.” Her response reflects the dual-edged nature of AI use. It can both stifle and stimulate creativity depending on how it’s used. According to a study published in Computers & Education, students who use AI as a tool for idea generation often see a boost in creativity, as long as they actively engage with and refine the suggestions AI provides, rather than relying solely on the technology (Deterding et al., 2022).
One of the most striking effects of AI usage in assignments is the increased temptation to try and shortcut the learning process. “I’ve seen students copy and paste straight from ChatGPT and deny it when being confronted. Anything that requires writing, whether formal or creative, seems to be a target for the use of AI.” said Mr.Carboni. This not only undermines the value of creative assignments but also damages the trust between students and teachers, as AI-generated work often lacks the personal touch and originality expected in student submissions.
Surprisingly, students are also aware of the risks involved in the excessive use of AI and how it might potentially damage their future. When asked, Madeleine Mendoza stated, “People who are going to be future doctors, politicians, and lawyers are blatantly copy-pasting assignments off of ChatGPT, we’re screwed.” This statement highlights the fear of over reliance of AI for assignments could have a long term effect, especially when it comes to their future.
Students often resort to AI usage due to convenience, “Because it's quick and easy, and people are lazy and they procrastinate.” Pointed out Mr.Carboni. This attitude raises concerns about students bypassing the learning process entirely. “I don’t try as hard to think of new ideas for things. But on the other hand, using AI has allowed me to create new ideas off of the ones that it gives me. This duality highlights that while AI can enhance creativity when used as a brainstorming tool, it can also hinder independent thought when used irresponsibly.” Stated an anonymous student.
However, some students entirely disagree with the usage of AI. When questioned, Michelle Au, a senior at GVHS stated, “I have very hard morals. Also, I don't need to use it in the first place if I already know the answer/can develop my own ideas/opinion.” This highlights the drastic difference in opinions that students can have over the use of AI.
While the duality in opinion over AI is seen, a concern rises. Are students less prone to be attached to their work if AI is used? An anonymous student answers the concern like this, “I think it really just depends on the assignment and how much of it is composed of AI. If it’s just busywork, I have no problem using AI, I just paraphrase a bit of what the bot is saying so that it sounds more like me.”
Despite concerns, AI continues to evolve, and younger generations will likely integrate it more deeply into their learning. “Unless there are significant measures to limit its usage, AI will continue to have a great influence.” Said Mr.Carboni. This suggests that while AI is here to stay, its role in education must be carefully monitored to ensure that it serves as a tool for enhancement rather than a crutch for students to avoid effort.
As the debate over AI and creativity continues, the responsibility falls on both educators and students to navigate this new landscape. While AI offers opportunities for learning, its misuse can lead to a decline in essential skills. The challenge moving forward will be to find a balance. Leveraging AI’s benefits while fostering genuine creativity and independent thought in the classroom.
